Greetings from Jean-Marie

9/1/2013

It is good to be back with the Magnolia Chorale. Did I say “good”? I meant great! At the recent board meeting, I was reminded why I like it so much: laughing with friends, great food made with great care, expertise in leading an organization, a willingness to collaborate, and a sincere interest in choir. All of these qualities give Magnolia Chorale a unique voice in our community.

I was with Magnolia Chorale when we celebrated our twentieth anniversary. As many of you know, I left Seattle to teach at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan. There were many good things about the position, but in my heart, I couldn’t leave Seattle. Tolerant attitudes, strong schools, a great set of friends, and temperate weather are just too hard to trade in for forty below winters.

So here I am to celebrate the silver anniversary of the Magnolia Chorale with you. I am excited! Twenty-five years, and we are stronger than ever. How should we celebrate? What can we do to make this year stand out? How do we remember our beginnings? Where do we see ourselves heading?

Sticking with the theme of the silver anniversary, our winter concert is dubbed “Silver Bells.” It opens with John Rutter’s magnificent Magnificat. The second half of the concert follows the bell theme and features handbell soloist, Nancy Kirkner. (If you want a sneak peek, you can see her on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiQBVP-vzio&list=PLD7B98DA7A921CD40 )

I can’t wait to get started with you in September. But in the meantime, I have plenty to do playing tennis, tending my hydrangeas, and soaking up the sun.

See you soon,

Jean-Marie
