Magnolia Chorale Seeks Music Director

Magnolia Chorale is seeking a new Music Director.

After eleven years with Magnolia Chorale, our beloved director, Dr. Jean-Marie Kent, is stepping down to accept an appointment as Artistic Director of the Seattle Children’s Chorus. So we are looking for a new director to fill her very talented shoes. Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, May 18, 2022.

About Magnolia Chorale
We are a community choir established in 1989. Our members come to us with prior choral experience, but no audition is required to join. We run two 13-week semesters each year, culminating in two concerts in December and two in late April or early May. Rehearsals are held in Magnolia on Sundays from 7 to 9 pm, beginning after Labor Day. We take a break in the summer, and from mid-December to late January. See our April 2022 program here. Magnolia Chorale is committed to inclusion and action to combat racism and inequality.

Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for a director who is musically capable, imaginative, and comfortable working with a community choir. We’re seeking a musician who can select appropriate music for a range of singing abilities, who has empathy and patience with the singers, and who knows how to get the best from a community group, where much of the learning goes on at rehearsals. We also would like someone who is interested in continuing our tradition of collaborating with schools and community artists from time to time.
If this sounds like you, or someone you know, apply now!

Submit your application by Wednesday, May 18, 2022.

What a joy it was to sing carols outdoors on December 4, 2021! Our first time singing together in person since the pandemic began. Many thanks to our supporters who have kept us going through it all.

Commitment to Anti-Racism
We want to let all our fans and supporters know that in fall 2020, in the wake of the terrible murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many others, we examined our history. We discovered several factors that have kept us from seeing the realities of systemic racism that affect us and our community, including:
  • Our geographic location, in a region of Seattle once subject to racial restrictive housing covenants and outside the redline
  • The demographics of our membership, strongly white
  • The nature of the Western European choral tradition, the product of historically white cultures.
As a result of this work, Magnolia Chorale has made a commitment to inclusion and action to combat racism and inequity. Read our full commitment.
